With 12 million users last month, it lets people create their own virtual immersive experiences, like modeling in a fashion show or making pies at a pizza parlor. Users buy virtual currency, called “Robux,” so they can increase their power in the experiences and games. Game creators, who range in age from 14 to 25, get a cut of the payments, and the popular ones can earn as much as $30,000 a month, according to the company. Baszucki, who studied engineering and computer science at Stanford, chose the name Roblox because it combines “robot” and “blocks.” In this condensed and edited interview, Baszucki explains why he thinks the company, which had more than $50 million in revenue last year and employs 170, will be worth billions of dollars.
