Gollum was once a hobbit named Sméagol, after murdering his cousin Déagol to gain the One Ring that his cousin found in the great River Anduin, Sméagol, after being shunned by the rest of his people, made his way under the Misty Mountains where tortured by the ring and having his life stretched out, existed for almost 500 years until the ring was found by the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins after it slipped off Gollums finger, he spent the rest of his life hunting for the ring and only getting it back after biting it off Frodo`s (the new ring bearers) finger he fell into the molten lava of mount Doom, thus ending his own life but also destroying Saurons ring
